Obstacle Courses Transform the Way Students Play

It's a well-known fact that children have always loved to play outside. Before developing technology, most kids grew up with early childhood playground equipment playing outside at the playground or running around a garden or field. Every parent should be encouraged to urge their children to do as much physical exercise as possible to remain fit and healthy.

Local councils around the globe have recognized the importance of investing in playground apparatus as this type of facility affords every parent a free opportunity to provide their children with a place to burn energy.

Recent developments

Recently the pandemic has caused some of those playgrounds too close to protect populations from Covid transmission. This has led parents to become more creative in providing their kids with a challenge that keeps them on their toes.

One such development is to develop an Obstacle course in a back garden, quiet street, or local park. Such a course can encompass challenges for the participants who can compete head-to-head or a timed approach with a mobile phone.

The obstacles can be made with household objects (a washing basket, a bucket, a garden hose, or a bamboo cane). Participants may have to run, crawl, and balance on, in, or over these household objects. These tests enhance speed, endurance, agility, and balance.

The benefits

Physical outdoor activities offer a multitude of health and wellness benefits for children. As well as the apparent physical activity benefits, obstacle courses push children to develop improvements in cognitive function and problem-solving skills.

An obstacle course developed at home using cheap, readily available materials is easy to make. However, the obstacle may not last the test of time. As the material deteriorates, it may lead to injury if not closely monitored and inspected.

The school developed obstacle courses.

Schools often have many facilities that can be easily used to build an obstacle course and both an indoor and outdoor location to host it. Schools have therefore taken up the reins in developing obstacle courses as part of the physical education curriculum. The materials used are often way more robust than the homebrew version of the activity and are safer and more beneficial to the children partaking in the activity.

Obstacle courses are usually temporarily set up by the students at the start of the class and put away again at the end. Simplicity is, therefore, key to the stage design of each of the stations within the course. These could be a simple narrow beam to traverse, a rope to climb up and reach a marker, or a set of hoops placed on the ground to place a single foot in as you move across it. Each stage can be set and dismantled easily by a couple of students.

Schools can, of course, build the best preschool playground equipment permanent obstacle courses, which are often placed alongside the traditional playground apparatus. These can be used in physical education classes as well as be used by the wider community.

Keeping children active is the essential subject here, and a playground and obstacle course keeps the challenge fresh and exciting, which encourages kids to use it more often. If you have children, get yourself out there and find your local obstacle course to wear them out.
